Encompassing Doors
Start by fastening Trim Channels along the outside edge of the door. Next, if your Moderra wall is going to extend above the door, attach a Starter Ledge or angle iron at the top. For details, see Installing the Starter Ledge. (Fig. 20)
Now that your door is prepared, cut your Moderra units to the lengh needed.
Apply a thin layer of Super-Stik to the Trim Channel and slide the cut units into the corresponding H-Channel. Alternatively, you can use a Moderra Tie. For details, see Using Moderra Tie. (Fig. 21)
Continue up the wall until past the door. Once past, place the 8" Blocks onto the Moderra Starter Ledge and continue as you would with a normal column.
Proceed up the opposite side of the door in the same way you did the first. Cut the Moderra units so they will be the same length as the 8" Blocks at the top of the door.
When the door is finished, place an H-Channel into the side of the Moderra units. (Fig. 22)
Finally, place flashing or caulking between the door and the Moderra units to prevent moisture from falling behind the wall.
Encompassing Windows
Start by fastening Trim Channels along the outside edge of the window. Next, if your Moderra wall will extend above the window, attach a Starter Ledge or angle iron at the top. For details, see Installing the Starter Ledge. (Fig. 23)
Now that your window is prepared, cut your Moderra units to the length needed. Apply a thin layer of Super-Stik to the Trim Channel and slide the cut units into the corresponding H-Channel. Alternatively, you can use a Moderra Tie. For details, see Using Moderra Tie.
Continue up the wall until past the window. Once past the window, place the 8" Blocks onto the Starter Ledge and continue as your would with a normal column.
Proceed up the opposite side of the window in the same way you did the first. Cut the Moderra units so they will end at the same length as the 8" Blocks at the top of the window. (Fig. 24)
When building your columns beneath the window, finish with a 4" space between the top of the column and the bottom of the window. This space is needed for the Moderra Sill. The Sill units should be installed under the window and glued into place using Super-Stik.
When the window is finished, place an H-Channel into the side of the units and attach to wall. (Fig. 25)
Finally, place flashing or caulking between the window and the Moderra units to prevent moisture from falling behind the wall.
Bringing Two Walls Together
As you are nearing completion of your Moderra project, you may need to connect two walls. You can do this two ways. First, build the second to the last wall completely. Then attach a Trim Channel and affix cut Moderra units with Super-Stik.
The second option is to build the two walls together. Start with a partial column next to the last one. Place three Moderra blocks in the wall and attach a Trim Channel cut for the height of the wall. Additionally, you can insert a Moderra Tie into the Block. (Fig. 26)
Now, cut an 8" Block to the size of the remaining column and slide it down into place. Apply glue to the back of the unit so that it will adhere to the Trim Channel. Additionally, you can insert a Moderra Tie into the cut Block. Make the last vertical join as tight as possible.
Repeat this step, building up one column and then the other until the wall is at the desired height. (Fig. 27)
Building A Moderra Pillar
The standard Moderra pillar is 16" square (outside dimension) with a 9-1/2" square interior. To increase the size of your pillar, add Moderra Blocks in full or partial sizes. (Fig. 28)
Begin by furring your support to accomodate the inside dimension of your Moderr pillar. Attach H-Channel the height of your Moderra pillar on opposite sides of one another.
Build the first course around your support. Cut the H-Channel into 4" clips to adjoin the Corner Blocks perpendicular to the full length H-Channels. These 4" clips should not be affixed to the pillar support. (Fig. 29)
As your continue with additional courses, cut the H-Channels into 8" clips to adjoin the corner units perpendicular to the full length H-Channel. This will ensure Corner Blocks are interlocked with the courses above and below them. Again, do not affix these to the pillar support. Use Super-Stik glue for added rigidity. (Fig. 30)
Note: Consult a structural engineer when utilizing a Moderra Pillar for structural support.
Enclosing a Deck
Moderra can easily be used to wall off an enclosure underneath a raised patio/deck.
Start at the lowest corner of the deck. Dig a trench, fill with gravel, and compact with tamper. Position and level the Starter Ledge. (Fig. 31)
The first corner consists of a full width unit, and 1/2 unit. Split a full width unit to make it 8" long. (Fig. 32)
Place one unit on top of another. Check to ensure the column is straight and level. Place H-Channel in the groves on the side of the units once the column is complete. (Fig. 33)
Place a Moderra Deck Bracket in the slot on the backside of the H-Channel. Screw the bracket into the deck. Continue building additional columns. (Fig. 34)
Substitute a Moderra Deck Vent for a full unit to allow for air movement. Glue corners together with Super-Stik when the last column is finished. (Fig. 35)
Finish the Moderra enclosure by installing Moderra Sill Block with Super-Stik glue. Landscape around the enclosure when finished. (Fig. 36) |
